Hillesvåg- Norwegian wild lamb wool
Rustic and durable yarn. Suitable for light blankets and shawls.
Norwegian wild sheep yarn is a 2-ply carded yarn made of naturally pigmented wool from old Norwegian sheep – also called Norwegian Wild Sheep, Ursau or Old Norwegian Outdoor Sheep. Naturally pigmented means that it is the sheep's own color that shapes the color of the yarn.
Norwegian Wild Sheep has two types of wool; soft, fine undercoat, and long, shiny guard hairs. Both fiber types are included in the yarn, which in turn gives the garment the unique properties of being both highly insulating and moisture-wicking. Norwegian Wild Sheep yarn is also suitable for light felting.
This unique yarn is a batch product and is seasonal due to relatively small batches. This is one of the shortest-traveled yarns from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, as most of the suppliers are sheep farmers located in Western Norway. Old Norwegian sheep are outdoors all year round, and are a very important player in landscaping along the coastal heathlands in Norway. Even though due to the cots, the yarn is not certified "organic" or labeled "Debio", it is so natural that it would certainly get it!
The yarn blooms beautifully in washing, so make sure to wash the finished product before use, and you will see that the yarn will then gain a little more volume. Hand washing and laying the garment flat to dry is recommended to ensure taking good care of your unique yarn from the outdoor roaming while sheep of Norway!
